Halifax County School Board
The Halifax County School Board is comprised of eight members who serve four-year terms. The board’s primary responsibilities are to set policy for the school division, approve the annual budget, develop a strategic plan, and hire a superintendent to operate the school division in accordance with board policy.
Members of the community are invited and encouraged to attend public meetings of the School Board to observe its deliberations. All School Board meetings except closed sessions are open to the public.
The Board holds business meetings at 6:00 p.m. monthly generally on the second Monday in the Public Meeting Room on the second floor of the Mary Bethune Office Complex, 1030 Mary Bethune Street, Halifax, VA. Special meetings are scheduled as needed. In accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, closed meetings are held for consideration of specific personnel matters, specific student discipline cases, property issues, legal matters, and other certain items according to Virginia law.
Work sessions of the Board are held to examine subjects in greater depth than is possible during business meetings.
Public hearings are scheduled on specific topics by the Board at various times during the year. Individuals wishing to address the board are requested to contact Mrs. Robin Mahan, Clerk of the Board, at 434-476-3120 prior to the meeting.
Halifax County residents who want to present their views to the Board may submit them in writing to School Board Members, P. O. Box 1849, Halifax, VA 24558.

Time is reserved at each regular business meeting for public comments. Individuals wishing to address the board are requested to contact Mrs. Robin Mahan, Clerk of the Board, at 434-476-3120, or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org, or contact the School Board Chairman prior to the meeting.
