Message from Ms. Owen - February 2017

Dear Parents,

Happy February!  This school year is going by very quickly.  Please continue to talk with your child about areas in which he/she would like to improve and together come up with two or three strategies to try.  Here are a few examples:  “I will read for 20 minutes every night.” “ I will complete my homework each night.” “I will practice my multiplication facts.”  Helping your child follow through with these strategies will assist your child in being successful.

Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.

STEM Mobile Learning Lab Visits Sydnor Jennings Elementary

IALR’s STEM Mobile Learning Lab Visits Sydnor Jennings Elementary Students.

Students participated in STEM activities and spent time on the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research’s (IALR) STEM Mobile Learning Lab. The STEM Mobile Lab visit was coordinated by Sydnor Jennings Elementary School staff and Dan River Year Americorps Member Vashunda Richardson who is serving at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center.

While on the Mobile Lab, IALR’s Program Coordinator, Bruce Waller, taught the students about electricity by having them use electronic snap circuits to turn electricity on and off with a switch and light a small bulb. Students were also introduced to the concepts of series and parallel circuits. The teachers watched learning come alive for the students.

The STEM Mobile Learning Lab advances K-12 science, technology, engineering and math education by providing quality, hands-on activities for students. Students and educators within IALR’s service region enjoy a high level of exposure to STEM education when they board the STEM Mobile Learning Lab.
