Thanks to a teacher mini grant from the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation, fourth grade students at South Boston Elementary School had a program from the Danville Science Center STARLAB Portable Planetarium. They discussed the phases of the moon, various constellations, and characteristics of the planets.
As a reminder, schools will be closed beginning Monday, April 7, 2025 through Friday, April 11, 2025 for Spring Break. Students will return to school on Monday, April 14, 2025.

Third-grade students had an exciting hands-on experience exploring force and motion! They designed and built balloon-powered cars, discovering how the force of air propels their creations forward. This engaging learning opportunity was made possible through the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation Mini Grant program.
First-grade students practiced counting by twos in an exciting, hands-on way using the Ozobot! They programmed the Ozobot to pause for three seconds at each star along the path, giving them time to fill in the correct numbers before the bot continued. This engaging activity made reviewing skip counting both interactive and fun!
Fifth-grade students engaged in an exciting hands-on project, building their own bristle bots using a vibrating motor and a battery. To bring their creations to life, they applied their knowledge of electrical circuits by designing and completing a closed circuit. This interactive STEM activity was made possible through the generous support of the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation mini-grant program.
First-grade students embarked on an exciting virtual field trip using VR goggles, bringing them face-to-face with amphibians, birds, fish, and mammals. This immersive experience allowed them to observe these animals up close and explore their unique characteristics in an engaging and interactive way.
The Southside Virginia Regional Technology Consortium (SVRTC) held an awards luncheon at Longwood University on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. Three educators from Halifax County Public Schools won awards. Kelly Weatherford from HCHS won the Instructional Support Award. Wanda Overby from Scottsburg Elementary won the Technical Support Award. Virginia Crutchfield from South Boston Elementary won the Technology Teacher Award. Congratulations to all of the awardees!

At the school board meeting on Monday, March 10, 2025, the board voted to convert Thursday, March 20, 2025, to a full instructional day for students.
Fifth-grade students explored electrical circuits by designing their own light-up name tags. They carefully constructed closed circuits to ensure their lights illuminated successfully. A big thank you to Hitachi for funding this engaging, hands-on learning experience!
Third-grade students explored soil layers by programming their Ozobots to navigate through each layer at varying speeds, simulating real-world movement through different soil types.

Due to the conditions of secondary roads, HCPS will be closed on Friday, February 21, 2025. This is a remote learning day for students and a work from home day for ten-month employees. Twelve-month employees are to follow code 2, report two hours late.

Due to the forecast for inclement weather this week, all elementary students will receive take-home learning packets and secondary students will complete work as assigned by their teachers. This work is to be completed over the days that school will not be in session. These assignments will come home with them Tuesday. In addition, the food services department has prepared food that students can eat at home during this time. If your child is absent on Tuesday, please call the school and make arrangements to pick up the learning packets and food. In the event we do not receive inclement weather and are able to attend school in-person, assignments do not need to be completed. Assignments will be collected and reviewed upon the first return to school. If you have questions during these remote learning days, please contact your child’s teacher.
