A special thank you to the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation for funding the Clothesline Math Project for Lynn Good, Mathematics Specialist at South Boston Elementary School. This project gave students across grade levels the opportunity to have rich conversations and justify their thinking while they compared numbers from early counting, such as 1-20, numbers through thousands, and even fractions and decimals.

Students in first grade classes at SBES recently had fun learning about butterfly life cycles. Thanks to the generosity of the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation seven classrooms were able to view, up-close and personal, the fascinating progress from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. Students enjoyed getting to know their caterpillars who became like class pets! Students liked naming them names like Kevin! After what felt like a short time, students gathered around the nets to say goodbye as the butterflies flew away.

Fourth grade students at SBES enjoyed a great day at Patrick Henry's home Red Hill. Students played colonial games, toured various buildings, made pottery owls, and searched for artifacts to decide what buildings or activities might have been in a particular area. This trip was made possible by teacher mini grants from the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation.

Thanks to the HCPS Education Foundation's Mini Grant program, second graders at SBES created a jellyfish made of paper cups and streamers to demonstrate a breathing technique. They were able to “see” their breath in action. Breathwork is one of the many coping skills second grade students at SBES learned this year.

Fifth grade students at South Boston Elementary were "getting bristly". They used a toothbrush, vibrating motor, and battery to create a closed circuit that allowed their bristle bots to move. This was a fun and exciting way to review electrical circuits. This learning opportunity was made possible by the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation Teacher Mini-Grant. Thank you for supporting our students.
