Dr. Tom Lauwers the founder of BirdBrain Technologies met with 6th and 7th grade students in the Computer Science Summer Camp to discuss his career, the skills needed for his career, and his personal life as well. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the robots he designed which they used during their camp. Dr. Lauwers founded BirdBrain Technologies in 2010 after receiving his doctorate in robotics from Carnegie Mellon University. His research was founded on engaging all students, regardless of background, in robotics and engineering. He seeks to design educational tools that catalyze positive making, coding, and engineering learning experiences in the classroom. Dr. Lauwers resides in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood with his wife, two kids, cat, and a small army of robots.

James Rutherford, a Data Center Technician and STEM expert from Microsoft, visited 4th and 5th grade students at Computer Science Summer Camp to explain his career and answer their questions. He was joined by Jeremy Satterfield, Tech Spark Manager at Microsoft, who discussed the benefits of STEM careers and the opportunities available locally and in Boydton, VA.

In Mr. Martin's fifth grade classroom at Cluster Springs Elementary, students embarked on an engaging exploration of the solar eclipse phenomenon. Through interactive activities, they crafted solar eclipse glasses for the Dash robot using LEGO materials. With Mrs. Elliott's guidance, they then utilized Blockly, a visual coding platform, to program the robot's movements. Additionally, students were tasked with recording factual statements about the solar eclipse and coding the robot to articulate them. This multifaceted approach not only deepened their understanding of scientific principles but also cultivated their creativity and problem-solving skills in the fields of technology and engineering.
