Students at Scottsburg Elementary enjoyed a special assembly called The NED Show. NED is a cartoon character whose name is an acronym for Never give up, Encourage others, and Do their best. The NED Show focuses on character education centering around positive growth mindset teaching students to work hard and show kindness in everything they do. During the assembly, the presenter did an amazing job captivating the students by performing yo-yo tricks as he brought his special life lessons to life.

October 2025 Newsletter - Scottsburg Elementary
Parents/Guardians,

We’re excited to invite you to participate in a new initiative that will help us improve communication and gather important feedback about HCPS. We are launching a new tool called Possip (short for "Positive Gossip") to better understand your experiences, concerns, and ideas.

What is Possip?

Possip is a feedback platform designed to help us listen to what matters most to you—whether it’s positive experiences, challenges, or suggestions for improvement. It’s an easy and effective way to ensure your voice is heard and helps us make informed decisions.

How Does It Work?

You will receive a quick 1–2 minute survey (also called a Pulse Check) via text or email. These Pulse Checks will give you the opportunity to:
• Share what’s going well.
• Raise any concerns or challenges.
• Offer suggestions for how we can improve.

How we're handling confidentiality

When you take the Pulse Check®, you will be offered anonymity and can answer if you want to share your name or not. If you choose not to share your name, we won't see who submitted the comment.

Why Are We Doing This?

This program is designed to explore how we can better connect with you and hear your insights. Our goal is to build a transparent and open line of communication that supports both our growth and your needs.

When Does It Start?

The first Pulse Check will be sent out on September 25, 2025. It only takes a few minutes to complete, but your input will have a lasting impact. Every response helps us improve and grow.

We value your time and feedback, and we look forward to hearing from you through Possip. Thank you for helping us make this initiative a success!

Too much screen time can slow problem-solving skills and creativity. Encourage at least one hour of screen-free outdoor play each day to boost brain power.

Free Idea: Create a digital scavenger hunt

Children take photos of different fall items: red leaf, pumpkin, acorn, etc.

During a STEAM activity, students at Scottsburg Elementary were challenged to use their innovative skills to construct their own version of a school using Legos under the direction of Khaela Powell, the Instructional Technology Resource Teacher (ITRT), and Wanda Overby, Computer LAN Manager. "If I Could Build A School" by Chris Van Dusen, was read to the students and pictures of the recent construction of Halifax County High School were shared with the students. They were then given the opportunity to come up with a design of their school and what they would like their school to include. The students rose to the challenge and definitely had many creative ideas. Using Legos, students began constructing their perfect school. Ms. Roller's fifth grade students even came up with a design for "The New and Improved Scottsburg Elementary School". Their school featured a pond for fishing, a floating cafeteria, and a special daycare classroom where their pets from home could come to school with them.

Students in fourth and fifth grade at Scottsburg Elementary recently learned about Monochromatic Art by creating Cyanotypes using sunlight to create artwork. Under the direction of Mr. James Conner, the art teacher, students used photosensitive fabric, artificial flowers, and artificial leaves to create botanical designs. The students then took their creation and exposed it to the sunlight outside. During the process, the UV rays in the sun burned the exposed areas darker while the unexposed areas protected by the flowers and leaves remained white. After a few minutes of sunlight, Mr. Conner rinsed the fabric in water which turned the exposed area into a deep blue. The students were amazed at how their designs emerged as a one-of-a-kind image.

On Thursday, September 3, 2025, an exciting time was had during the Scottsburg Elementary "Back to School Reading Bash". Students and their parents enjoyed hotdogs, lots of snacks, free books, crafts, and many fun indoor and outdoor activities. The students even got a chance to explore the hands-on activities on "Gus the Learning Bus". At the end of the event, students were excited and formed a long line to take a chance to dunk Mr. Nathan Lantor, school principal, in the dunking booth. The faculty and staff of Scottsburg Elementary would like to send a special thank you to members of Scottsburg Baptist Church and Piney Grove Baptist Church, Clover Volunteer Fire Department, Officer Trevor Leath and Officer Declan Armstrong of the Halifax County Sheriff's Department and Fiona the K-9 Dog, Mr. David Gunnells, Park Manager of the Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation, and Mr. Brandon Brown, General Manager of the South Boston Speedway. Students in Ms. Freeman's second grade class at Scottsburg Elementary have been learning about Citizenship. They have been learning how to identify the benefits and responsibilities of being a United States Citizen. The students learned about the Pledge of Allegiance and that the flag stands for the United States and reminds us to be good citizens by being kind, fair, and helpful to others. When the Pledge of Allegiance is recited, the students gained an understanding about how they are promising to take care of their country and treat everyone with respect. The flag also helps us to remember what it means to be part of a community and a nation.
