Students at Scottsburg Elementary had a special visitor appear while arriving at school on Friday, December 20. Santa Claus took time from his busy schedule to make a quick stop to see the students. He also met with the Ms. Cowan, the principal, to finalize his "Nice and Naughty List". Later that day, students were also greeted by The Grinch as he was trying to catch up with Santa to collect all the toys and gifts before Christmas. Some students were glad to see The Grinch, while others ran away from him. It was an exciting day! The faculty and staff at Scottsburg Elementary hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

Scottsburg Elementary hosted a successful Family Literacy Night on Thursday, November 21, 2024, bringing together students, parents, and teachers to celebrate the joy of reading and emphasize its critical role in academic success. Conducted by the dedicated teachers of Scottsburg Elementary, the event aimed to empower families with strategies to support their children’s literacy development.
The evening began with an engaging introduction to the importance of early literacy. Families learned that children who do not read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave high school without a diploma. Teachers highlighted statistics from The Children’s Reading Foundation, which reveal that only one in three students read proficiently by the third grade. Attendees were reminded that more than 85% of the curriculum beyond third grade relies on reading proficiency, making literacy a vital foundation for future success. Governor Youngkin’s Virginia Literacy Act was also discussed as a critical step toward addressing this issue statewide.
Participants explored the new Houghton Mifflin "Into Reading" program, with teachers leading two interactive sessions on its key expectations and strategies. These sessions, held from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. and 6:35 to 7:05 p.m., provided parents with hands-on tools to foster their children’s reading skills at home. The activities inspired parents to embark on an exciting reading adventure with their children, reinforcing the message that literacy is a shared journey.
The event concluded with a community dinner, fostering connections among families and staff.

Ms. Freeman's class took part in an exciting STEM challenge led by Mrs. Lewis, ITRT. Students learned how shelves are made and explored the concepts of vertical and horizontal structures.
Using a set amount of large craft sticks and playdough, students worked together to design and build shelves capable of holding several toys. The challenge required them to create an independently standing shelf that was either wide enough or tall enough to hold as many toys as possible.
Students showed incredible creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork throughout the activity.
Many thanks to the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation for their continued support of hands-on, engaging learning experiences. Their generosity is making a real difference in helping our students explore, create, and grow!

Mrs. Blanks' class began December and the holiday season with a fun and festive STEM challenge, creating their very own Jingle Mazes! Students worked with a partner to design unique mazes for a jingle bell to navigate. Their mazes included dead ends, tricky challenges, several “fake” paths, and more, requiring creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork.
This exciting STEM activity was made possible thanks to the generosity of the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation. Many thanks to them for their giving spirit and support of our young engineers as they develop skills for a bright future!

Students in Mrs. Taylor’s second-grade class at Scottsburg Elementary School embraced the holiday spirit through an engaging STEM challenge! Working in pairs, students engineered toy shelves sturdy enough to hold Christmas toys. Using creative materials, they designed and constructed shelves that required teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance.
This hands-on activity introduced students to the design and engineering process, fostering critical thinking and collaboration. The smiles and excitement in the classroom were only made possible thanks to the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation, whose generosity brought this opportunity to life.
A special thanks to Mrs. Lewis, our Instructional Technology Resource Teacher (ITRT), for facilitating this exciting learning experience.
Check out the photos of our future engineers in action!
Thank you to Halifax County Public School Education Foundation for making moments like this possible. Together, we’re building bright futures!

Mrs. Laughorn's first-grade class at Scottsburg Elementary School had a blast learning about different types of trees and their sizes! Students explored Christmas trees and festive decorations before taking on a fun STEM challenge led by Mrs. Lewis, ITRT, building the tallest tree they could using plastic cups.
Working in pairs, students practiced teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance. Although many trees came tumbling down, the students showed incredible determination as they rebuilt and improved their designs again and again.
This hands-on activity brought smiles, laughter, and lots of learning as students engineered their tallest creations. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation for their generosity in making this engaging and meaningful learning opportunity possible. Your support continues to inspire our young learners to dream, build, and never give up!

Winter break for students will be December 23, 2024 - December 31, 2024. The New Year’s holiday is January 1, 2025. January 2, 2025 and January 3, 2025 are professional development/teacher workdays. Students return to school on Monday, January 6, 2025.
We hope that you have a very happy and safe holiday season.

Scottsburg Elementary has been hosting a series of engaging Saturday Academy sessions, where students and teachers collaborate to strengthen skills in math, reading, writing, science, and social studies. The dedication of both students and staff across multiple sessions was rewarded with a special visit from Santa, who celebrated their hard work and encouraged their continued efforts. These sessions highlight the school’s commitment to academic excellence and fostering a love of learning in a fun, engaging environment.

At Scottsburg Elementary during Computer Science Week, students in Mrs. Kristy Satterfield's third grade class had a great time learning about coding and completing the Hour of Code challenge with Mr. Jeremy Satterfield and Mr. Jerry Shelton of Microsoft. Students were excited and enjoyed learning about how code is written and how video games are created using various codes.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming events at Scottsburg Elementary.

Congratulations to Dr. Tim Duncan, music teacher at Scottsburg Elementary, who was the winner of the "Thanks and Giving" campaign sponsored by Long and Foster of South Boston. This campaign recognized the hard work of the educators and wanted to give a token of appreciation for the endless hours of hard work put into working with our children. Dr. Duncan's name was randomly drawn to win $100. Melanie Saunders, of Long and Foster of South Boston, presented the prize to Dr. Duncan. Congratulations Dr. Duncan and to ALL Educators!

As a reminder, all schools and offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 through Friday, November 29, 2024 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
We hope you have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Fourth graders in Mrs. Blanks' class at Scottsburg Elementary recently took on an exciting engineering challenge: building the tallest Lego tower! With guidance from Mrs. Blanks, Mrs. Seamon, and ITRT Mrs. Christie Lewis, students worked in pairs to explore what makes a structure strong, including the importance of a solid base, foundation, and structural integrity. They also learned about measurement, discussing both metric and standard units. Their towers were measured in inches and centimeters using yardsticks. The tallest tower stood at 35 ½ inches. The students had only 25 minutes to build. To inspire their designs, students viewed some of the world’s most famous towers, like the Shanghai Tower, Makkah Royal Clock Tower Hotel, One World Trade Center, and the iconic Empire State Building. After discussing the engineering and design process, students became engineers themselves, constructing their very own towers. This hands-on activity sparked creativity and teamwork as students applied engineering principles to bring their ideas to life.
