Mark your calendars for these upcoming events at Scottsburg Elementary.

Congratulations to Dr. Tim Duncan, music teacher at Scottsburg Elementary, who was the winner of the "Thanks and Giving" campaign sponsored by Long and Foster of South Boston. This campaign recognized the hard work of the educators and wanted to give a token of appreciation for the endless hours of hard work put into working with our children. Dr. Duncan's name was randomly drawn to win $100. Melanie Saunders, of Long and Foster of South Boston, presented the prize to Dr. Duncan. Congratulations Dr. Duncan and to ALL Educators!

As a reminder, all schools and offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 through Friday, November 29, 2024 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
We hope you have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Fourth graders in Mrs. Blanks' class at Scottsburg Elementary recently took on an exciting engineering challenge: building the tallest Lego tower! With guidance from Mrs. Blanks, Mrs. Seamon, and ITRT Mrs. Christie Lewis, students worked in pairs to explore what makes a structure strong, including the importance of a solid base, foundation, and structural integrity. They also learned about measurement, discussing both metric and standard units. Their towers were measured in inches and centimeters using yardsticks. The tallest tower stood at 35 ½ inches. The students had only 25 minutes to build. To inspire their designs, students viewed some of the world’s most famous towers, like the Shanghai Tower, Makkah Royal Clock Tower Hotel, One World Trade Center, and the iconic Empire State Building. After discussing the engineering and design process, students became engineers themselves, constructing their very own towers. This hands-on activity sparked creativity and teamwork as students applied engineering principles to bring their ideas to life.

Second graders in Ms. Freeman and Mrs. Taylor's class at Scottsburg Elementary have been exploring digital citizenship with ITRT Christie Lewis. Using the book Chicken Clicking, students learned how to stay safe on the internet, use devices responsibly, and make smart online choices. This engaging lesson empowers our young learners to navigate the digital world with confidence and care.

Third grade students at Scottsburg Elementary put their creativity and critical thinking to the test with Lego Education Motion kits, guided by ITRT Mrs. Christie Lewis. Working in pairs, students engineered and constructed their own sail cars to explore concepts of force, motion, and gravity. After designing and attaching paper sails, they used their own wind power to set their cars in motion, testing and reengineering their designs to see which could travel the farthest. This hands-on activity allowed students to dive into science SOLs, apply the scientific method, and follow the engineering design process. Our young scientists showed impressive creativity and determination!

As a reminder, all schools and offices will be closed Monday, November 11, 2024 in observance of Veterans Day.

Students in Miss Roller’s class at Scottsburg Elementary used their knowledge of electricity and simple circuits to test if objects were insulators or conductors.

At Scottsburg Elementary, Mrs. Chandler’s kindergarten class dove into an exciting hands-on learning experience, facilitated by Mrs. Lewis, using Legos to build letters from their names! Our young engineers practiced identifying colors and putting their problem-solving skills to work. After constructing several letters, they expanded their learning by exploring new ways to build, showing off their creativity and teamwork. While Ms. Freeman's and Mrs. Taylor's second graders used teamwork and creativity, to construct stable, freestanding bridges out of Legos over 'pretend' ponds. Her students explored the basics of bridge design and engineering. We are so proud of our budding builders and the way they all took on the challenges with enthusiasm!

A fun-filled day was had as students in Mrs. Chandler's and Ms. Watts' kindergarten class at Scottsburg Elementary had an opportunity to go on an adventure to "The Junction" in Mecklenburg County. In the classroom, students have been learning about how plants grow and what plants need to help them grow. The students enjoyed learning more about plants, seeing real corn stalks in the cornfield, and taking a tour of the pumpkin patch. It was an exciting day!

On October 24, students at Scottsburg Elementary had the opportunity to see Steve Somers', the Amazing Teacher. He presented his new magic show "Once Upon a Time", based on fairy tales. The students enjoyed watching Mr. Somers conduct his magic to bring fairy tales alive. Everyone was thrilled by his performance and special magical talents.

Scottsburg Elementary received a huge shipment of much needed supplies donated by Walbridge Construction. Mrs. Jacqueline Taylor, 2nd grade teacher, coordinated this project and collected various lists of items needed from the teachers. Once the lists were compiled, the Walbridge Construction team jumped on board and fulfilled the teachers' requests. Walbridge Construction is a general contractor working in Southern Virginia devoted to helping surrounding communities. The faculty, staff, and students are most grateful and would like to give a huge thank you to Walbridge Construction for going above and beyond to provide much needed items to use in their classrooms.

As a reminder, Monday, October 21, 2024 is a Teacher Workday/Parent Conference Day. Students do not attend school.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming events at Scottsburg Elementary.

As a reminder, all schools and offices will be closed Monday, October 14, 2024 in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Students in Ms. Cecile Watts' Kindergarten class had great fun during Guidance. After discussing the importance of showing kindness to others, students read the book" Enemy Pie", by Derek Munson, illustrated by Tara King. The main character was given a recipe for enemy pie (a sure way to get rid of enemies), but instead discovered an unexpected new friend (and a little kindness!). Ms. Jessica Rose Hayes, Guidance Counselor at Scottsburg Elementary School, gave students an opportunity to make their own "enemy pies" while working together and showing kindness to their classmates.

National School Lunch Week will be October 14-18, 2024.
