At Scottsburg Elementary, Mrs. Chandler’s kindergarten class dove into an exciting hands-on learning experience, facilitated by Mrs. Lewis, using Legos to build letters from their names! Our young engineers practiced identifying colors and putting their problem-solving skills to work. After constructing several letters, they expanded their learning by exploring new ways to build, showing off their creativity and teamwork. While Ms. Freeman's and Mrs. Taylor's second graders used teamwork and creativity, to construct stable, freestanding bridges out of Legos over 'pretend' ponds. Her students explored the basics of bridge design and engineering. We are so proud of our budding builders and the way they all took on the challenges with enthusiasm!
A fun-filled day was had as students in Mrs. Chandler's and Ms. Watts' kindergarten class at Scottsburg Elementary had an opportunity to go on an adventure to "The Junction" in Mecklenburg County. In the classroom, students have been learning about how plants grow and what plants need to help them grow. The students enjoyed learning more about plants, seeing real corn stalks in the cornfield, and taking a tour of the pumpkin patch. It was an exciting day!
On October 24, students at Scottsburg Elementary had the opportunity to see Steve Somers', the Amazing Teacher. He presented his new magic show "Once Upon a Time", based on fairy tales. The students enjoyed watching Mr. Somers conduct his magic to bring fairy tales alive. Everyone was thrilled by his performance and special magical talents.
Scottsburg Elementary received a huge shipment of much needed supplies donated by Walbridge Construction. Mrs. Jacqueline Taylor, 2nd grade teacher, coordinated this project and collected various lists of items needed from the teachers. Once the lists were compiled, the Walbridge Construction team jumped on board and fulfilled the teachers' requests. Walbridge Construction is a general contractor working in Southern Virginia devoted to helping surrounding communities. The faculty, staff, and students are most grateful and would like to give a huge thank you to Walbridge Construction for going above and beyond to provide much needed items to use in their classrooms.

Students in Ms. Cecile Watts' Kindergarten class had great fun during Guidance. After discussing the importance of showing kindness to others, students read the book" Enemy Pie", by Derek Munson, illustrated by Tara King. The main character was given a recipe for enemy pie (a sure way to get rid of enemies), but instead discovered an unexpected new friend (and a little kindness!). Ms. Jessica Rose Hayes, Guidance Counselor at Scottsburg Elementary School, gave students an opportunity to make their own "enemy pies" while working together and showing kindness to their classmates.
National School Lunch Week will be October 14-18, 2024.

Students in the Achieve Kindergarten Class at Scottsburg Elementary enjoyed learning about the season of Fall during science class. After the lesson, the students had a great time decorating pumpkins with Mrs. Duffer and Mrs. McCargo.

Rain showers did not damper the Scottsburg Elementary "Back to School Bash" held on Thursday, September 19, 2024. Over 200 students and family members enjoyed hotdogs, snacks, outdoor activities and games, fire trucks, police cars, the K-9 unit, and race cars. The faculty and staff of Scottsburg Elementary would like to send a special thank you to Scottsburg Baptist Church, Piney Grove Baptist Church, Clover Volunteer Fire Department, Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department, the Halifax County Sheriff's Department, the Virginia Conservation Police, Bruno the K-9 dog, Racecar Driver #18 Cameron Goble, and Racecar Driver #54 Jason DeCarlo for coming out to support this year's "Back to School Bash". It was great to see so many smiling faces of the students and families during this fun and exciting event. Thank you for the continued support of our school.
Officer Tyler Blanks, with the Virginia Conservation Police, brought his K-9, Bruno, to visit Mrs. Jennifer Laughorn's 1st grade class at Scottsburg Elementary School. The students have been learning about communities and their workers. Officer Blanks had Bruno perform a demonstration for the children, showing them what his job entails. Bruno was loved by all of the children and staff at Scottsburg Elementary, and they would like to thank Officer Blanks for taking the time to teach everyone about the K-9 program.
A tree fell on a power line causing the alarm to go off at the high school. We were trying to avoid drills and alarms until the Snapchat threats are calmed. Fire and police responded. All students and staff are safe and back inside. The superintendent, school administration, and top law enforcement officials are meeting today to generate solutions around this. Please report, do not repost any threats you may see. There is no credible threat at this time.
HCPS is aware that spam messages continue to surface. None of them are credible at this time. Please DO NOT repost the messages. Report them to school officials and law enforcement.

To celebrate Dot Day, students in Mr. James Conner's art classes at Scottsburg Elementary were creative using dots. In fifth grade, students learned how to stipple to design various drawings of their choice using dots while kindergarten students made ladybugs with dots. The second grade students completed a beautiful landscaped creation inspired by George Seurat's Pointillism Art using small, distinct dots of color to form an image. Dot Day is a day to celebrate creativity, courage, and collaboration. It is celebrated to commemorate the publication of the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.
HCPS Families and Staff,
As you are aware from previous communications this week, HCPS has been investigating rumors of threats and social media posts that look like threats of violence to our schools. Together with law enforcement, we have looked into each of these accounts. Our investigations have revealed that none of these threats have been targeting schools in Halifax.
We received an email from the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) addressing the mass distribution of a SnapChat image combined with an added on-screen text being distributed across North America via TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram. Analysis of this image and the mass reproduction indicates this is a spam Snapchat image and is not specific to any school or division.
These are obviously frightening messages and are designed to cause panic and disruption in communities.
So, what should you do if you see something concerning like this?
1. Immediately contact law enforcement and/or school officials to share what you have seen. We will investigate EVERYTHING that comes to us and we want people to share concerning messages so they can be investigated fully.
2. Report, don't Repost- Reposting these images instead of reporting them directly to officials is delaying our investigation and response to the concern. Reposting is causing panic and disrupting our schools and community before the legitimacy of the concern can be determined. If it is reported to us and is determined to be a legitimate threat, we will take immediate action and you will be informed about what we are doing to keep everyone safe.
Halifax County Public Schools and the Halifax County Sheriff's Department are diligently working to investigate every concern in an effort to keep our students and staff safe from any threat of violence. We need your help in these efforts. Please continue to communicate with us directly when you see or hear concerns.

Please save the date for the second annual CTE Showcase on Thursday, October 17, 2024. This event provides an opportunity for all students and families, including elementary to learn more about Career and Technical Education in Halifax County. Participants will be able to tour lab spaces and participate in live demonstrations. The first 100 attendees will receive a voucher to one of the on-site food trucks.
