Field Trip to the Pumpkin Patch: A Day of Fun and Learning - Students recently enjoyed an exciting field trip to The Junction in Buffalo Junction, VA, where they kicked off the day by meeting up with their families. After everyone gathered, the students split into groups to explore a variety of engaging activities at different stations. The day included a thrilling adventure through a challenging corn maze, fostering teamwork and problem-solving skills. Students also took a hayride through the pumpkin patch, playing an I Spy game to enhance their observation skills. Other highlights included diving into a corn pit, bouncing on a massive bouncy pillow, and racing down a thrilling slide. Throughout the day, students interacted with various games that encouraged physical activity and friendly competition. This memorable outing not only celebrated the fall season but also provided opportunities for outdoor learning and fun. A big thank you to everyone who helped make this trip possible for the students at South Boston Early Learning Center!

Ms. Lee's students participated in various pumpkin centered activities. They used fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination to complete each activity. Students matched upper and lower case letters. They practiced one-to-one correspondence using pumpkins and pumpkin shaped candy. They also used early math skills to identify shapes and create their very own shape pumpkin.

After beginning a new theme: Under Construction-Let’s Build, the students in Ms. Hackney's class used their imaginations, expressed their creativity, worked on their problem-solving skills, and practiced their communication skills, all during block play. They used Lincoln logs, Legos, foam blocks, and snap blocks to create buildings, bridges, and animals. Laughter and excitement could be heard throughout the classroom as the children worked together building things then taking them apart to build something new.

Mrs. Edmunds' and Mrs. Carr’s class talked about apples and fall. The centers were focused on apples. Students used their senses to investigate an apple, how it looks, how it smells, its size, and how it taste. At this station, they compared red apples and green apples and discussed the differences in taste. Students also had fun doing an apple name craft where they used their fine motor skills to tear paper, and then put the seeds with the letters of their names in order. Lastly, students enjoyed math and sensory at the apple picking center. They used tongs to pick up apples and count the apples that they picked.

Mrs. Watts' and Ms. Putnam’s Prek-4 class learned about Johnny Appleseed, Autumn, and Apples. The students participated in Apple STEAM stations where they explored activities that used the following skills: gross motor, fine motor, communication, collaboration, problem-solving, sorting, counting, literacy, art, and the senses. They enjoyed building apple trees, navigating through a maze while holding an apple in a spoon, apple bobbing using tweezers to sort the various apples by color, and coloring a book about the life cycle of an apple while tasting the various types of apples and graphing their favorite apple. As a whole group, our class participated in an apple volcano experiment and compared the results using different solutions.
