Student of the Month - Students that attend South Boston Early Learning Center received Student of the Month awards for the month of February.

Teacher Mini-Grant - Mrs. Watts’ and Ms. Putnam’s class, from South Boston Early
Learning Center, received a Teacher Mini-Grant titled "Everyone Can Cut" from the
Halifax Education Foundation. This grant provided the classroom with a variety of
adaptive scissors designed to support young learners as they develop fine motor skills.
Adaptive scissors are specially designed to help preschoolers learn how to cut by
improving finger placement, encouraging proper grip, and building hand strength and
control. These tools are a valuable addition to the classroom, promoting independence
and confidence as children work on essential early learning skills.

Interim reports for the fourth nine weeks are available for viewing on the Campus Portal. If you need assistance with the portal or need a paper copy of the report, please contact your child's school.

Teacher Mini-Grant - Ms. Hackney's class at South Boston Early Learning Center enjoyed the Teacher Mini-Grant, Farming around the Room, they received from the HCPS Education Foundation. The students enjoyed their farm-theme materials, some which included a barn with farm animals, barnyard animal lacing cards, farm stickers, counting cows, and animal sound books. The students worked on their fine motor skills, listening skills, social-emotional and literacy skills through individual and small group activities. They were also able to work on math skills and imaginative play while interacting with their peers during large group activities.

Craft Activity – The PTO at South Boston Early Learning Center sponsored an Earth Day Craft
Activity for the students. We would like to thank the parent volunteers who came to help their
child’s class.

Music Soothes the Soul Teacher Mini-Grant - Mrs. Young’s class at the South Boston Early Learning Center received a Teacher Mini-Grant from the Halifax County Public Schools Education Foundation. The students worked on listening skills and following directions while having fun through the use of musical instruments. They were also able to work on fine motor skills as well as gross motor skills through dance and play while interacting with their peers and musical instruments.

Any student that has completed grades PK-5 this school year is invited to participate in Summer Success. There will be fun learning activities with reading, math, and science!

As a reminder, schools will be closed beginning Monday, April 7, 2025 through Friday, April 11, 2025 for Spring Break. Students will return to school on Monday, April 14, 2025.
We hope that you have a wonderful, safe break.

Mrs. Young’s class participated in an investigation on how plants get their daily nutrients. During our investigation, we used celery sticks, food coloring, and water. We placed celery sticks in cups with green, red, and blue colors of water overnight. The next day, with the use of the food coloring, the students were able to see that the celery sticks were able to drink the water using their straw-like veins. The investigation showed that the celery sticks had changed colors on top according to the color of water in their cups. In conclusion, our class learned that plants are living things like we are, and they absorb and take in the nutrients that they require to live as well.

The students in Mrs. Edmunds' class explored the wonders of growth! They learned how trees, fruits, vegetables, and flowers grow, and took a closer look at the parts of a flower. To bring our learning to life, each student planted their very own seed!
Now, we’ll care for our plants, give them what they need, and watch them grow over time. We can't wait to see the beautiful flowers that bloom!

When learning about insects, Ms. Shelton and Mrs. Sutphin’s class read a story about ladybugs and created a ladybug craft.

As part of our "Watch It Grow" unit, the students in Mrs. Watts' and Ms. Putnam's PreK4 class have been engaging in fun and interactive activities centered around flowers. The students had a great time creating their own flowers and labeling the different parts of a flower. In addition, they enjoyed using the dramatic play area to plant flower seeds with potting soil and gardening tools, bringing a hands-on approach to their learning experience.

The students, in Mrs. Ford's class, used fine motor skills to decorate flower pots, with different art materials. They also used these skills to manipulate seeds by scooping soil into their flower pots. This was a fun sensory activity that allowed them to engage with various textures (soil, seeds, water) and promote sensory awareness.

Ms. Hackney's and Ms. Stoner's class expanded their early literacy skills using their reading buddies and books about animals. They tried to find the stuffed animal they used as a reading buddy in the books they were exploring, along with talking about the front, back, title, author, and illustrator of each book. We also used the books to introduce the children to some animals they had never heard of or seen. Expanding on this activity later in the day, we used the animal books as a way to reinforce letter recognition.
