Students from Mrs. Fears 5th grade class investigated matter by looking at volume. They measured using graduated cylinders to find the volume of different sized marbles. Then they used their measurements to calculate the volume of each marble. This experiment also showed how solids have definite volumes.

Sinai Elementary October Calendar of Events

In recognition of National Custodian Day, Sinai Elementary School provided pizza and treats to celebrate our custodians. Parent volunteer, Mrs. Tutor also provided treats to celebrate our custodians! Sinai is very lucky to have such an awesome custodial staff!

Virginia Farm to School Week will occur October 2-6, 2023.
The Crunch Heard ‘Round the Commonwealth increases awareness of Virginia farm to school programs. To celebrate the event, our schools in Halifax County as well as many others across Virginia will simultaneously take a bite out of a Virginia grown apple. Together, we will make some noise for farm to school programs! The “Crunch” is held during Virginia Farm to School Week each year. The Crunch will take place on Thursday, October 5, 2023.

Sinai 5th graders investigated inertia. Inertia states that unless acted upon by a force objects at rest stay at rest and objects in motion stay in motion. Instead of the pennies flying off with the note card, they stayed at rest by splashing into the cup of water.

Pre-K students enjoyed visiting the STEAM Lab with Mrs. Tingen. They were able to explore using Keva blocks. Playing with blocks develops perseverance skills, increases attention span, promotes cooperation with others, and develops fine motor skills. Block play also encourages early science concepts like gravity, weight, stability, and balance. Early math skills are increased using one-to one correspondence, adding on, taking away, and measurement. Spatial awareness, problem solving and language development are additional benefits to playing with blocks.

Mr. Dale Miller from the Old School Car Club recently made donations for families of Sinai students. Mr. Miller is pictured with Mrs. Francine Davis, principal of Sinai Elementary School. Members of the Old School Car Club are: Dale Miller, Brad Miller, Larry Miller, Curtis King, Henry Medley, David Humphries, Frank Drumwright, Bernard Logan and Vinnie Whitlock. Sinai would like to thank the Old School Car Club for all they do for Sinai.

Mrs. Rutherford's class read the story Dan Had A Plan. In the story the main characters make bats and butterflies to sell to raise money for new library books. The bats and butterflies were made using zip lock bags, clothes pin, googly eyes, skittles and raisins. The students got to make their very own bats and butterflies just like in the story.

Sinai 5th graders took advantage of the STEM Lab to use Legos to complete a challenge on motion. Teams had to design and build structures that demonstrated kinetic energy and potential energy. Once students had completed their structures, they shared their designs with the class.

Mrs. Dailey's ECSE Class Investigator's Club Book Parade!!!
Part of this week's lesson was learning about parts of a book, front cover, back cover, pictures, words. To finish off the week students were invited to pick one of their favorite books from the classroom library and have a Book Parade.

Too many absences can keep students from succeeding in school. If students miss 10% of the school year, they are considered chronically absent.

Thank you to the employees of Presto for the generous donation of school supplies. Presto also donated products to our schools. We appreciate the donation so much!

Students in Ms. Terry's PK3 class had a nice treat for having a good week so far. The children did a science experiment using white grape juice and silicon popsicle molds. We poured the juice in each individual mold, put it in the freezer at 9am and took them out at 230pm, the students enjoyed their frozen treat!

Attendance Matters!
Did you know If a student is absent 10% or more of the school year, it is considered chronic absenteeism? Ten percent is 18 days per school year or an average of two days a month.

5th graders at Sinai used scientific investigation skills on a Skittles experiment. Students went through each part of the Scientific Method to determine whether Skittles would lose their color quicker in cold water or hot water. Hot water was the winner!

Ms. Terry's PreK3 class engaged in sensory color play using shaving cream. As students mixed the shaving cream with their hands, they saw a color appear. The students also practiced writing the letter E and number 5 in their shaving cream.

Sinai Stem Sorbet! Students in Mrs. Rutherford's class are learning about states of matter by performing experiments. The students made sorbet out of apple juice. First, they put apple juice and food coloring in the small bag. Then they added ice, water and salt to the large bag. The smaller bag was placed inside the larger bag. The students shook the bags of apple juice until the liquid froze. Because the bag gets very cold, the students wore gloves to shake the bags. The apple juice starts out as a liquid but changes to a solid as it freezes. The students then ate the results.
