Students in Mrs. Lipscomb's class at Sinai Elementary enjoyed exploring moving matter by blowing through a straw. Students made observations, asked questions, made conclusions based on their observations, and communicated those observations with their peers and teacher. This experiment helped students in the understanding of scientific and engineering practices.

Students in Mrs. Rutherford's class at Sinai are learning about animals. Today during STEM time the students made bird feeders. First, they punched a hole in the toilet paper roll with a hole punch and thread twine through the hole. Next, they spread peanut butter alternative on toilet paper rolls. Finally, they dipped the peanut butter rolls in bird seed. The bird feeders will be hung outside the school to feed all the local birds.










This week in the ECSE classroom students were introduced to a new Investigator Club member, Chuck Wood. He loves superheroes. He likes to help fix things. Children talk about ways to help and care for others. For show and tell students brought in their superheroes.


Students in Mrs. Dailey, Ms. Richardson and Ms. Terry's classes at Sinai Elementary recently showed Mrs. Francine Davis just how much they appreciate her by celebrating with her for National Principal's Month!



Sinai Elementary fourth graders have been studying about plants and their parts. They recently did an activity involving lollipops, paper cut outs , and pipe cleaners. Students used the pipe cleaners to make the stem, and roots of the plant. They used paper cut outs for the leaves and the flower as well the lollipop.. Students then discussed each part of the plant and its function.










Sinai 5th graders explored matter by using various materials to insulate an ice cube. Their challenge was to create the best insulation to prevent the ice cube from melting. The winning team used aluminum foil, stuffing, and cotton balls.









Students at Sinai Elementary were recognized for achieving Perfect Attendance during the month of September. Each student received a certificate and a prize.


Today, October 10, 2023 is World Mental Health Day. This is a day to talk about mental health and show everyone that mental health matters. Sinai kindergarten started the month off celebrating Mrs. Davis for National Principal's Month. Our theme was "Without you this place would be a zoo" We are so thankful to have such an amazing principal! We love Mrs. Davis!


Students from Mrs. Fears 5th grade class investigated matter by looking at volume. They measured using graduated cylinders to find the volume of different sized marbles. Then they used their measurements to calculate the volume of each marble. This experiment also showed how solids have definite volumes.









Sinai Elementary October Calendar of Events

In recognition of National Custodian Day, Sinai Elementary School provided pizza and treats to celebrate our custodians. Parent volunteer, Mrs. Tutor also provided treats to celebrate our custodians! Sinai is very lucky to have such an awesome custodial staff!



Virginia Farm to School Week will occur October 2-6, 2023.
The Crunch Heard ‘Round the Commonwealth increases awareness of Virginia farm to school programs. To celebrate the event, our schools in Halifax County as well as many others across Virginia will simultaneously take a bite out of a Virginia grown apple. Together, we will make some noise for farm to school programs! The “Crunch” is held during Virginia Farm to School Week each year. The Crunch will take place on Thursday, October 5, 2023.

Sinai 5th graders investigated inertia. Inertia states that unless acted upon by a force objects at rest stay at rest and objects in motion stay in motion. Instead of the pennies flying off with the note card, they stayed at rest by splashing into the cup of water.










Pre-K students enjoyed visiting the STEAM Lab with Mrs. Tingen. They were able to explore using Keva blocks. Playing with blocks develops perseverance skills, increases attention span, promotes cooperation with others, and develops fine motor skills. Block play also encourages early science concepts like gravity, weight, stability, and balance. Early math skills are increased using one-to one correspondence, adding on, taking away, and measurement. Spatial awareness, problem solving and language development are additional benefits to playing with blocks.










Mr. Dale Miller from the Old School Car Club recently made donations for families of Sinai students. Mr. Miller is pictured with Mrs. Francine Davis, principal of Sinai Elementary School. Members of the Old School Car Club are: Dale Miller, Brad Miller, Larry Miller, Curtis King, Henry Medley, David Humphries, Frank Drumwright, Bernard Logan and Vinnie Whitlock. Sinai would like to thank the Old School Car Club for all they do for Sinai.

Mrs. Rutherford's class read the story Dan Had A Plan. In the story the main characters make bats and butterflies to sell to raise money for new library books. The bats and butterflies were made using zip lock bags, clothes pin, googly eyes, skittles and raisins. The students got to make their very own bats and butterflies just like in the story.
