Students and staff at Sydnor Jennings Elementary School recently took part in The Great Candy Election, an engaging activity that introduced them to the election process. They voted on their favorite treat, choosing between suckers and chocolate. With an impressive 71% of the votes, chocolate emerged as the clear winner! This enjoyable experience allowed our students to learn about voting in a fun and memorable way.

This week, first graders explored the significance of Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day, discussing the historical context and the diverse perspectives surrounding these celebrations. They learned about Christopher Columbus's voyages and the impact on Indigenous cultures, fostering an understanding of the importance of recognizing and honoring the history and contributions of Native American communities.
Students in Miss Doss's class engaged in an interactive VR lesson with Skribby the Skeleton, where they practiced skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's. As part of the activity, students solved math riddles to uncover hidden hats beneath the floor and had fun dressing up Skribby in the process!
The Crunch Heard 'Round the Commonwealth is an exciting event that takes place during Virginia Farm to School Week, encouraging students, like those at SJES, to support local agriculture by collectively enjoying locally grown apples. This initiative not only promotes healthy eating but also raises awareness of farm-to-school programs across Virginia, fostering connections between students, local farmers, and the community. Participating in this vibrant celebration is a fun and educational way to highlight the importance of sustainable food systems. #VACrunch #VAFarmtoSchool
Students in Mrs. Waller's first grade class explored coding with the Bee-Bot, combining technology with hands-on learning. As they programmed the Bee-Bot, they reinforced key place value concepts from their math lessons, making the activity both engaging and educational.
The SJES Pre-K students had a delightful visit to Owens Farm, where they engaged in a variety of hands-on activities and enjoyed the experience of picking their own pumpkins, making it a memorable and educational outing for the young learners.
